Cemig Generation and Transmission

Cemig Distribution

Cemig’s activities and the environment

Commitment to environmental quality is the basis of the principles that govern all of Cemig’s activities. In all its projects and programs, Cemig aims to implant and encourage awareness of environmental issues in its employees and working partners. This approach is specified in Cemig’s Environmental Policy – and accepted and obeyed at every stage of all work. It values the employees, enhances the company, and guarantees that sustainable development is achieved in all activities.

Our place in Electricity

Cemig has Latin America’s largest electricity network: approximately 532,000 kilometers of distribution lines, and 9,500 kilometers of transmission lines. The “Cemig Group” has 109 plants, generating, transmitting and distributing electricity to more than 11 million consumers.

Further to its commitment to protecting the environment, Cemig invests in programs for conservation of energy, and research into new alternative sources of power: these include solar energy – both thermal and photovoltaic; wind power; and energy from natural gas.

The concept of Environment

Cemig’s activities in favor of the environment can be seen as pioneer initiatives in both Minas Gerais State and Brazil. Through partnerships in research surveys and studies with universities and research centers, Cemig now has a vast database of environmental information – which has been widely used by the scientific community, by bodies responsible for preservation of the environment and, above all, by the public at large.

Operating on various fronts, Cemig has as its central concept the human being and his/her needs. This is Cemig’s motivation for its commitment to controlling the impacts of its activities, and stimulating, encouraging and motivating improvements in the environment of the regions where it operates.

This stance is reflected in its environmental actions and programs, which go beyond compliance with the official rules – and demonstrate Cemig’s deep commitment to the issue of the environment as a whole.

Environmental Policy

The establishment of Cemig’s Environmental Policy causes the company formally to include environmental questions in its process of taking decisions – in all its projects, processes and activities related to expansion, construction, operation and maintenance of assets; in carrying out services; and in partnerships.

The Policy, stated in Six Principles, and issued in 2016, has the purpose of guiding all actions of the Company in relation to environmental questions, and emphasizes its commitment to the principles of the UN Global Compact related to environmental questions.

Principle 1: Strategy

To balance economic and social development with environmental responsibility, conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use of natural resources, management of wastes, and mitigation of and adaptation to the effects of climate change, taking into consideration: evaluation of the risks and opportunities in its decisions; and Cemig’s Policies NO-02.17 (Biodiversity) and NO-02.15 (Water Resources).

Principle 2: Management

To promote interaction between the areas of the Company in relation to environmental issues, aiming to give consistent support to the decision process and to the establishment of specific internal procedures; to establish environmental criteria in the selection and in the contracts of its suppliers and service providers; to seek adoption of the environmental management systems; and to manage environmental risks, in accordance with the directives established by Cemig Policy NO–02.19 (Corporate Risks Management Policy).

Principle 3: Compliance with legal requirements

To ensure compliance with the environmental legislation currently in force, and other applicable requirements, and when necessary to complement these with the company’s own requirements.

Principle 4: Prevention of pollution

To identify, evaluate, administer and mitigate the environmental impacts of its activities, adopting the appropriate control measures to prevent pollution.

Principle 5: Commitment to continuous improvement

Continuously to improve environmental performance, through establishment of goals and targets, application of technologies and optimization of processes, seeking to minimize environmental impacts; and to foster studies and research that correlate the subjects of energy, the environment and social responsibility.

Principle 6: Communication and environmental education

To arrange for the Company’s environmental communication to be based on and to follow the directives established in Cemig Policy NO-02.14 (Communication), maintaining transparent dialog with stakeholders, and helping to form a critical awareness in relation to environmental issues; and also Cemig Policy NO-02.15 (Cemig’s Communication with the Community), truly taking into account the opinions, expectations and priorities of this specific public; and to organize and carry out actions in training, communication and education directed to the internal public related to environmental issues.
