ASIN Project

The Asin Project (Integrated Social Actions) was created in September, 2000 and was intended to systematize and motivate Cemig’s employees to undertake volunteer work within the communities in which the company is active. The project’s activities, aimed at the capacitation, orientation and integration of the volunteers and at broadening the reach of the currently ongoing initiatives, have contributed towards an improved quality of life in the communities serviced. Asin is focused on social development, with the goal of sustainability, and is active in the areas of education, healthcare, the environment and community-oriented activities. The main focus is placed on education in view of its transformative power and importance in the construction of a society that is just and prepared to face the future.

In little more than three years, a thousand volunteers have already registered to participate in the project and approximately 100 partnerships have been entered into with various institutions. Since 2001, Child and Adolescent Rights Councils have benefited from resources provided by the “AI6% Project – Creating Citizens”, a partnership between Asin and the Cemig Intermanagerial Association (AIC) that sees to it that 6% of the income tax owed by the company’s employees is destined for Child and Adolescent Funds (FIA).

The Asin project has benefited approximately 25,000 people throughout the State of Minas Gerais, including children, adolescents and the elderly. Noteworthy is the fact that Cemig is present in 4,131 villages and 774 of the 853 Municipalities in the State. Since 2001, project volunteers have participated in the “Christmas Without Hunger”, “Blankets & Winter Clothes” and “V DAY” campaigns, as well as in the “Playing in the HEADQUARTERS” and “Mudslide & Flood Victim” projects through which approximately 100 tons of goods such as food, clothing, footwear and toys have been collected.

Asin’s mission is to, through the use of productive and targeted incentives, transform the communities involved into partners and help develop the will to help. In 2003, the Cemig Asin Project received the “Corporate Citizen Seal”, awarded by CDL – the Shopkeepers’ Chamber of Commerce and the Uberlândia City Council. One of the Asin Cemig projects, the Laranjão Project, was also afforded recognition in the form of the “Human Being Award”, given by the Brazilian Human Resources Association in the “Best Human Resources Management Practices” category. In 2002, Asin had already been awarded the “Corporate Citizen Seal”, in addition to the “Good Corporate Citizenship-MG” award conferred by Transformar magazine – a partnership between FIEMG and Exame magazine, as well as awards conferred by the COGE Foundation – composed of more than 40 companies in the electrical sector – in the Corporate Social Responsibility category.

The effective impacts that have been felt in the quality of life of those who have benefited are:

  • A reduction in the illiteracy rate amongst youngsters and adults in the regions of Nanuque, Braúnas and in the central area of the State of Minas Gerais.

  • An improved quality of life for primary school students in various regions of the State of Minas Gerais by means of conducting ophthalmologic exams, donating pairs of glasses, giving speeches on 5S and quality, offering information technology, music and art courses, building libraries, promoting athletic and cultural activities and effecting improvements to the physical environments of state and municipal schools, among other activities.

  • Social projects that lead innumerable families in the State of Minas Gerais to an awareness of the possibility of sustainable social development.

  • The ministering of professional development courses, offering the opportunity to enter the job market.

  • Donations of toys, blankets and warm clothes and foodstuffs to charitable institutions in the communities in which Cemig provides services.

  • Participation in campaigns in support of children with cancer.

  • Reintegration of innumerable children, adolescents and elderly people back into society as active citizens.
